Trying something new can feel exciting… and a little scary — for both kids and parents. That’s why at Tuma Skateboarding, we design every first lesson to be safe, simple, and full of joy. Whether your child is 4 or 14, their introduction to skateboarding should be less about “doing tricks” and more about discovering confidence on wheels.
Here’s a complete look at what you and your child can expect from that very first lesson.

😊 1. A Warm, Friendly Welcome
The goal from minute one? Make your child feel safe and supported. Coach Tuma greets every student with kindness, positivity, and patience. We take a few minutes to talk, break the ice, and get to know your child’s comfort level — no pressure, no expectations.
Whether your child is shy, full of energy, or totally new to skating, the session starts with trust and connection.
🧰 2. Safety Gear First
Before anyone steps on a board, we make sure they’re fully geared up with:
A certified skate helmet
Knee pads
Elbow pads
Wrist guards (optional but recommended)
Coach Tuma helps adjust the gear so everything fits comfortably and securely. We talk briefly about how to fall safely — and remind kids that falling is normal and okay.
🛹 3. Introduction to the Board
Once geared up, we start with:
Learning how to stand with balance
Understanding foot position
Finding their stance (regular vs. goofy)
We keep the board stable and grounded — often on grass or a soft surface — so kids can get used to the feel before rolling.
Everything is done slowly and at the child’s pace. No rush. No pressure.
🚶 4. Learning to Push and Stop
Once standing is comfortable, we introduce:
How to push off gently
How to balance while rolling
How to stop safely (usually with a foot brake)
Kids practice small movements, celebrate little wins, and feel their confidence grow. For many, just rolling forward a few feet is a big success — and we celebrate it as such.
🎯 5. Encouragement, Not Performance
The first lesson is never about tricks or technical mastery — it’s about:
Feeling the board
Building comfort
Learning through play
There’s no scoreboard. Just high fives, big smiles, and positive feedback.
👨🏫 6. A Coach Who Adapts to Your Child
Coach Tuma has over 40 years of experience skating — and more importantly, teaching. He knows how to read a child’s mood, build trust, and keep things fun.
If your child is nervous, we slow down. If they’re ready to try more, we go for it. Every lesson is tailored to the child’s energy, age, and ability.
🏁 7. Ending on a High Note
We wrap up the session with a cool-down chat, a few final rolls, and lots of encouragement. Kids leave feeling proud, energized, and eager for more.
Often, the most common thing we hear after a first lesson is:
“When can I go again?”
🎉 Final Thoughts
A first skate lesson isn’t about being perfect. It’s about discovering a new kind of freedom, fun, and personal challenge. With the right gear, a patient coach, and a supportive vibe, your child’s first skateboarding experience can become a memory — and a skill — they carry with them for life.
